Self Storage Packing Tips

Most of us have a lot more stuff than we know what to do with. Often these are unique possessions that have been passed down to us, or are really fond of, and we simply don’t want to sell them. Here is some useful information on the best way to pack your goods for safe keeping, even if in your attic or garage. But if you need to free up space in your place, Self StorageOne self storage locations are best!

Sometimes in our haste to get all that stuff packed away into self storage, we overlook proper packing procedures. Many of us just stick things in boxes, label them and take them down to the storage unit without giving it another thought and are discouraged when they go back months later only to find things broken or damaged.

With just a few precautions, and a little common sense, we can pack our things into a self storage unit so that when we go back to get them, they are in just the same condition as how we left them.

Self Storage Tip#1

Make sure that any object you pack is clean and dry. If you are planning to wash china, lamps or other items before packing, then leave plenty of time for them to dry thoroughly before packing.

Self Storage Tip #2

Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap. Often people wrap antique lamps, figurines or other glass or porcelain items in newspaper thinking that this will be good enough to keep it safe. The ink from newspaper can transfer to glass or porcelain and cause permanent damage to the finish. Also newspaper does not offer adequate protection from breakage.

Self Storage Tip #3

Decide whether you need climate controlled storage for your items. When deciding upon whether or not to spend the extra money for a climate controlled unit, you will have to take into consideration such things as:

  • Type of item being stored
  • Duration of storage
  • The weather in your region
  • It is against the law to store materials that are hazardous or combustible such as gasoline, cleaning fluids, paint, etc. Drain all gasoline from lawnmowers, power tools, boats, snowmobiles, etc.

If you aren’t sure exactly what you need in terms of a storage unit, then talk to the manager at your local Self Storage One facility. Each facility has an on-site manager with many years of experience in moving and storage who can help you decide exactly what you need. The friendly personnel at Self Storage One are always available to help you figure out exactly how much space you will need.

Additional Packing Tips:

  • Store frequently used items at the front of the unit to avoid having to search for them.
  • Appliances must be thoroughly clean and dry. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors slightly open.
  • Store mattresses and box springs on long edges. Wrap for protection and elevate off of the floor.
  • Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a wardrobe carton.
  • Use your bureau drawers as packing space.
  • Do not use newspaper to pack with. The ink may smudge off on your items.
  • Leave a small space between the goods stored and the storage unit’s walls.
  • When packing books, pack them in small cartons that weigh no more than 30 lbs. Alternate bindings and cushion them with wadded packing paper.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard and marked “FRAGILE.” Stand them straight up. Don’t lay flat!
  • Keep your out-of-season clothes accessible, you may have your belongings in storage longer than anticipated.
  • If storing wool items, use cedar ships or mothballs to prevent moth damage.
  • Wax wood furniture before storing it. Use sheets or cotton cloth to cover furniture.
  • Never store anything in sealed plastic bags, especially in non-A/C storage. The humidity will cause damage to your goods.
  • Do not stack heavy or folded objects where they could shift or collapse when you move or need access.
  • When packing boxes, try to limit the weight to 30 lbs. or less per box.
